Guidelines for St. Luke Volunteers Print E-mail

General Information

Two overnight volunteers are needed per night from 7:00 p.m. to 6:15 a.m. (7:00 p.m. to 8:15 a.m. Saturday).

Volunteers should bring sleeping bag, pillow and alarm clock.

Overnight hosts spend time with guests, play games with the children, and are available in case of an emergency.

The following materials are on a table in a pastoral office:
  1. Families Moving Forward Guidelines for St. Luke Volunteers
  2. Logbook (Overnight volunteers may use the logbook to note anything that should be reported to the St. Luke coordinators or the Day Shelter coordinator.)
  3. First aid box
  4. Keys for outside doors and the two offices where hosts sleep
Phone
A phone for guests is located in the hallway outside of the church office.  Phone use should be limited to 5 minutes. No long distance, 900 numbers, or collect calls are allowed.

Smoking
No tobacco use is permitted in the buildings or on the grounds.

Locking Doors
Overnight volunteers should lock outside doors at 10:00 p.m.

Medical Emergency Procedures:

  1. Call rescue squad, police or 911.
  2. A volunteer host should accompany the guest to the hospital.  If an adequate number of hosts is not present to permit one to go to the hospital, call a volunteer coordinator to accompany the guest to the hospital.
  3. Report the emergency to the volunteer coordinator as soon as possible with information about medical status and arrangements.
  4. Record emergencies in the logbook.
