The Cost of Making War – A Spiritual Perspective

Tom White, active peace and justice worker, is a member of the Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, Veterans for Peace, Minnesota Peace Project, and Interfaith Peacemakers of Edina. He was an International Election Observer in El Salvador in 2000 and 2004.

White will share his spiritual motivation for his political involvement and advocacy for the marginalized as he explores the growing disparity between U.S. military spending and the limited, remaining resources available for our growing domestic and global needs.

“I am going to destroy some myths, raise some questions, rock some boats, possibly make some of you uncomfortable, but hopefully raise your awareness and call you to action.  I will state some facts and the saddest thing about them is that they are
true…”

The Emotional and Personal Costs of War

Larry Johnson, environmental storyteller/educator, President of Minnesota Veterans for Peace, Vietnam War medic, conscientious objector, story teller by trade, and peace activist by choice, will speak from his military experience and that of fellow veterans.

Johnson will speak to the hidden, damaging emotional and personal cost of war to veterans, including the long term impact on families and community of deployment of parents, multiple back-to-back deployments, and the historic, cultural disconnect between those who “serve” and those who don’t.

Both presenters will answer questions following their presentations. Light refreshments will be served during a time of conversation and discussion.
