The NSDAR Conservation Committee Award by the Lake Minnetonka Chapter

We are honored to share that St. Luke has been awarded the NSDAR Conservation Award in recognition of its environmental leadership and efforts. This award recognizes adult and youth volunteers, including DAR members, with distinguished conservation records; businesses that exhibit sustained efforts to improve the environment or to educate the public on conservation issues; and compensated individuals who go above and beyond the requirements of their jobs. The criteria for issuance include: outstanding efforts in wildlife and nature centers; resource management; park establishment; youth leadership; conservation-related media; and education.

St. Luke Presbyterian received this award for its extensive earth care and eco-justice work, which includes:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive ecological restoration plan for the restoring and caring for the church’s 4.29 acres, creating a healthy, diverse ecosystem of native plants, supporting the local watershed, and nurturing climate conditions.

  • Removing a massive invasion of common buckthorn and herbaceous invasive plants, planting 35 native shrubs and trees, restoring areas with native species of grasses and flowers, reclaiming land along Groveland School Road by planting pollinator and rain gardens, and using accumulated wood debris to create habitat piles for wildlife.

  • Installing solar panels on the church roof in 2014.

  • Planting a community food garden and an apple orchard, which provides fresh produce for local food banks.

  • Maintaining an area for an American Indian community sweat lodge
