The August Change for Change recipient, Makoce Ikikcupi, is acquiring and developing land within Dakota ancestral territory, where Dakota people may establish new communities grounded in sustainability and adherence to ancient ways of being. They are working to resume traditional practices of wild-ricing, sugar-bushing, hunting, and foraging, while also growing traditional gardens, reconstituting Dakota forms of governance, practicing their spirituality, educating their children, and, throughout all these activities, speaking the Dakota language.

Makoce Ikikcupi has established three villages and plans for more.

  • Zani Otunwe (Village of Wellbeing): a sustainable, culturally oriented community for landless Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) people to return to Dakota homeland in Granite Falls, MN

  • Hohwoju Otunwe (Village of Vibrant Growth): a major food production site for Oceti Sakowin people including a marketplace, kitchen, food storage, and a climate battery greenhouse in Mountain Lake, MN

  • Patkasada Otunwe (Painted Turtle Village): a wild ricing community restoring Dakota people’s partnership with wild rice and protecting the waters that nurture this traditional food in Turtle Lake, MN

When you give generously in the red Change-for-Change envelopes in August, you are contributing to restorative justice for the Dakota people and supporting their efforts to re-establish their spiritual and physical relationship with their homeland to ensure their ongoing existence and cultural survival.
