Hunger Strike to Shut Down HERC

St. Lukers! Check out the hunger strike schedule below and sign the petition to shut down the HERC (Hennepin Energy Recovery Center) garbage burner.

On April 10, four Hennepin County community members will begin a hunger strike. They are demanding that Chair Irene Fernando and the County Board vote to decommission the HERC trash burner—something the county has refused to do for 37 years while a Black and working-class North Minneapolis neighborhood breathes the pollution.

Before the strike begins, we want you to understand why—and hear directly from the hunger strikers themselves.

Freedom to Breathe Virtual Panel and Rally: Why a Hunger Strike?

Join us this Thursday, April 2, 5:30–6:30 p.m.

University of Minnesota professor and movement leader Dr. Rose Brewer will be joined by McKnight Award winning poet Stephani Booker, hunger striker Janet Kitui, and Minnesota Environmental Justice Table Associate Director Adina Black for a conversation about what it means to put our bodies on the line—whether it’s living in the shadow of a toxic trash burner or through a hunger strike.
